In the past, if you wanted to lessen the appearance of scars your only option was the application of lotions and creams that had minimal effect. But thanks to advances in technology, today you can have scars lessened with cosmetic surgery. Although scars are permanent, you can reduce their size and appearance. For patients with scarring on very visible areas such as the face or hands, scar revision surgery can be very satisfying.
Types of scars
There are different types of scars. Acne scars appear as surface irregularities or discoloration. Hypertrophic scars are thick clusters of tissue that form at a wound site. They usually appear red and raised, and may develop and become wider each day. Keloids are larger than hypertrophic scars. Keloids can be itchy or painful, and have the tendency to pucker. They can extend beyond the edges of the healed cut or wound. Contracture scars can restrict movement since the tissues and skin have the tendency to pull together as they heal.
Is scar revision for you?
Anyone in reasonable good health with scarring from surgery or injury is a candidate for revision surgery. Patients do need realistic expectations, however, as revision surgery is not a magic want making scars completely vanish. Also, if the scarring is on the face, any revision surgery needs to wait until active acne or other skin conditions clear up.
Different surgical options
During your consultation, Dr. Trovato will discuss your various surgical options. He will opt for the best method to fit your particular scarring: skin grafts, surgical excision, flap surgery, and Z-plasty (which repositions the scar to make it less noticeable).
What results can I expect from scar revision?
Scar revision surgery is permanent, but its full results don’t show themselves for a few months up to one year after your surgery.
