JUVÉDERM® is a popular dermal filler used to reduce wrinkles, facial creases, and areas that have lost volume. It is made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps keep the skin plump, hydrated, and vibrant.
How does JUVÉDERM® work?
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar-based compound that is naturally produced by the body and is responsible for maintaining the moisture and nutrients in the skin cells. Hyaluronic acid promotes smoothness and volume in the skin, making it look supple and youthful. However, time and aging diminish the body’s ability to produce hyaluronic acid. JUVÉDERM®, which contains hyaluronic acid particles, replenishes the hyaluronic acid to improve the appearance of furrows, wrinkles, and sunken areas of the face. Once injected, the hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules to plump the area surrounding the injection, filling wrinkles and lines.
Who are good candidates for a JUVÉDERM® treatment?
JUVÉDERM® is effective on creases and lines around the forehead, nose, and mouth. It can improve facial scarring from acne. It also is used to plump and define the lips.
What happens during a JUVÉDERM® treatment?
A JUVÉDERM® treatment usually lasts 30 minutes or less. The filler is injected into the dermis layer of the skin, working to fill out the wrinkle or line from below. Although most patients don’t have a problem tolerating the slight discomfort of the injections, a topical anesthetic can be applied beforehand.
What can I expect while recovering from a JUVÉDERM® treatment?
Unlike Botox, JUVÉDERM® results are immediate. Generally, the body will absorb the filler after six to nine months. At that point another session will be necessary to maintain your results. For some, results may last up to a year.
What are the risks involved in a JUVÉDERM® treatment?
Since JUVÉDERM® is made of naturally-occurring substances, reactions are quite rare. There may be slight bruising at the injection sites, but that is minimal.
