What is Rhinoplasty?

rhinoplasty reshapes the nose

Rhinoplasty (also known as nose surgery), has been a popular cosmetic surgery procedure for decades. Colloquially known as a nose job, rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to achieve harmony with the rest of the face. This may mean reducing its size, removing a bump on the bridge, or a variety of other changes. Nose surgery can also correct defects, whether congenital or from injury, to enable the patient to breathe more efficiently.

Types of Rhinoplasty

There are four general types of rhinoplasty:

Closed Rhinoplasty (Endonasal Rhinoplasty): is a procedure performed on patients who want minor changes to their nose, such as reshaping the tip of the nose or the nostrils. It is less invasive than an Open Rhinoplasty, and the incisions are made inside the nostrils.

Open Rhinoplasty (External Rhinoplasty): is performed on patients who want a more dramatic correction to their nose. The incision is made across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils, and the soft tissue is lifted away so that Dr. Travato can contour the bone and cartilage to the desired shape.

Revision Rhinoplasty (Second Rhinoplasty): is performed on patients who have had a rhinoplasty procedure in the past and are not happy with the results.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty: is for patients who want to have a rhinoplasty procedure but also maintain their ethnic identity.

What are the Goals of Rhinoplasty?

Dallas plastic surgeon, Dr. Trovato performs rhinoplasty for a variety of different end goals. Patients have the following reasons for the surgery, among others:

  • Establish harmony between the nose and the face
  • Alter the width of the nose bridge
  • Enhance the nose profile, removing bumps or humps
  • Reshape a nasal tip that may be too large, drooping, upturned, or boxy
  • Improve the angle of the nose to the mouth
  • Reshape or narrow the nostrils
  • Correct deviation or asymmetry in the nose

What Happens During a Rhinoplasty?

There are two techniques
used in the surgery

In a “closed rhinoplasty”, the incisions are hidden within the nostrils. In an “open rhinoplasty”, the incisions are made across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils. In both techniques, Dr. Trovato gradually lifts away the soft tissues that cover the nose. The underlying bone and cartilage are then contoured to the desired shape. If an augmentation is done, the additional cartilage needed may be taken from the patient’s septum. In the case of a deviated septum or injury repair, the septum and the nose’s inner structures will be adjusted to promote proper breathing. The soft tissues are then put back in place and stitched close. If nostril reshaping is desired, it can be done during the final phase of the rhinoplasty.

How Long is the
Rhinoplasty Procedure?

The entire rhinoplasty procedure generally lasts one to two hours.

Who are Good Candidates for a Rhinoplasty?

dissatisfaction with the current size or shape

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are those 13 years old and above. Why? The nose is generally fully developed by age 13. The candidate must also be unsatisfied with the current size or shape of his or her nose. But they must be realistic with expectations. A new nose is just that, not an entirely new person.

Results and Recovery

For some time after the procedure, rhinoplasty patients can expect some puffiness in the area, nose ache, bruising and swelling, a dull headache, stuffiness, or bleeding. Most of these issues usually pass within two days, and most Dallas rhinoplasty patients can return to work in about a week.

Days after the surgery, results from the nose surgery will become more apparent, especially after the swelling subsides. However, the swelling may return time and again over that first year after surgery. It can be especially prevalent in the morning, gradually fading throughout the day. Patients who wear glasses may have to tape their glasses to their foreheads or position them snugly on the cheeks for about seven weeks after the procedure.

What are the Risks of Rhinoplasty?

Rare complications

There may be minor complications that come with rhinoplasty, yet they are quite rare. Some of these risks include nosebleed, anesthetic reactions, and infection. During your consultation for rhinoplasty Dallas plastic surgeon, Dr. Trovato will discuss these risks with you.

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision or secondary rhinoplasty corrects deformities caused by a previous operation on the nose. It is a more difficult procedure to perform than primary rhinoplasty because there is less cartilage to work with and there may be scarring or tissue contracture (tightening). However, skilled plastic surgeons can improve both the appearance and the function of the nose.

Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be scars after Rhinoplasty?

Because the incisions on a Closed Rhinoplasty are inside the nose, there will be no visible scars. The incisions on an Open Rhinoplasty are small and well-hidden by facial features.

How much does a Rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of a rhinoplasty will depend on what type of procedure is being performed and the extent of the work being done. The cost will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Travato.

Are Rhinoplasty results permanent?

Yes, rhinoplasty is a permanent change to the shape and contour of your nose.

When can you return to work after a Rhinoplasty?

Most patients return to work one to two weeks post-surgery. You will be given detailed instructions of tasks you can and cannot perform and for how long. Complete recovery typically takes six weeks.

Does insurance cover Rhinoplasty surgery?

Typically health insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures. If there is a medical component to your rhinoplasty, trouble breathing, or a deviated septum, for example, then health insurance may pay for that portion of the procedure.
